Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures

Japans most iconic mountain, at 3776m the highest in Japan.

Located roughly 100km east of Tokyo Mt.Fuji is often considered as being Japans most Iconic location. Being the focus of countless artists work in the form of song, poems and paintings included on the back of the 5000yen note. It also inspired climbers, sightseers and photographers.

富士山 (Mt.Fuji) as it is often written now most likely comes from the 富 which means abundant and 士 which refers to soldiers. This seems to be a reference to samurai who would train by climbing the mountain centuries ago. It there after became a holy place to the shinto religion and was climbed by male preists. This was until 1830 when Tatsu Takayama make the climb disguised as a man.

不二山 (Mt.Fuji) is the Kanji I prefer to mean "not" and "two", this can be translated as unparalleled and can be seen at Subashiri SengenJinja. Which is believe it is, no trip to Japan is complete without a visit to Fuji.

Since the 1200`s when the first assent of Mt.Fuji is said to have happened pilgrimages to the summit and the shrines located there have been the dreams of countless Japanese natives and now foreigners a like. The goddess of Mt.Fuji is called Konohanasakuya-hime or Sakuya-hime for short. She is the goddess of the sakura petal and life. When Mt.Fuji became angry and erupted Sakuya-hime entered the mountain to calm it down and remains there placating the mountain to this day.

One of Hakones most notable features is Lake Ashi. Surrounded on all sides by mountains towering above the lake and famous for its red Torii gate standing in the lake. This particular get commemorates the monk Mangan who was given visions that he should make a Temple in Hakone. Before he could however he had to take care of the Dragon known for eating young girls. 

Hakone and the surrounding area is filled with fantastic walks. On our hiking trips we try to find the perfect balance between Hiking, Culture and History as well as sightseeing. Hakone

Kanagawa Prefecture

Onsens, famous world wide. Hiking with stunning view of Mt.Fuji.  

Hakone is located in the Prefecture of Kanagawa. A prefecture well known for its nature and mountains as well as being close to Tokyo. In the Meiji period this even lead the Emperor to establish his summer household there. Nowadays Hakone is most known for its sightseeing and onsens or Japanese public baths. The onsens are naturally heated and pass through various different geological areas giving the water very unique properties. Also famous for its mountians the highest of which is Mt.Kamiyama at just under 1500m which last erupted in 2015; Hakone is a ideal place to go hiking. To this day Hakone is still a very popular place to visit. Ideally located between Tokyo and Kyoto it makes the perfect 2 day stop off. With fantastic transport options of gondolas, mountain climbing trains and even a pirate ship there are countless ways to travel the area.

Our tours make sure to include a hike, using one of the popular transport options and an onsen of our recomendation (optional) as well as seeing some of the sights of Hakone.
