Round trip Overview
This tour gives a really good introduction to Hakone using a combination of interesting public transport and walking to give you an enjoyable day out while also giving you an insight into the history and culture of the area.

This tour starts with pick up by car from the Hakone area. Our first stop is Hakone Yumoto where we will have a chance to buy the Hakone pass which will be very useful for our tour today. After collecting our passes we will take the Tozan train to Gora. This is a very interesting train ride on a switch back track, an extremely unusual way to climb from near sea level to 500ms.
After the train we will ride the Funicular tram to Sounzan and then the gondola to Togendai. This is a fascinating journey. We travel via Owakudani, a volcanic valley with active sulphur vents and hot springs, where we will have a tour of the area as well as a chance to buy the famous black eggs rumoured to give you an extra 7 years of life.
When we arrive at Togendai, on the shores of beautiful Lake Ashi, we have lunch and then go to Hakone Machi, famous for the Hakone Shrine. The visit to the shrine is an opportunity to learn more about the culture and folklore of Japan and find out about the legend of Mangan who defeated the 9 headed dragon, Kuzuryu. This is a great time to take pictures of the red Torii gate on the lake.
Following this there will be a short hike on the ancient Tokkaido Road, a route which originally linked Edo ( now named Tokyo ) to Kyoto. It has a fascinating history and was used by the Samurai during the Edo period. We will stop for a snack at a traditional tea house on the road which has been in the same family for 14 generations. They serve some traditional foods or mochi, amazake and tea.
After this we take a bus back to Hakone Yumoto were we can visit an onsen as well as a chance to do a little bit of shopping if there is time.
Aspects of the tour can be customized such as pacing, onsen or specific things that people want to see. If you have stayed in Hakone the day before the start location can also be altered.
